Formula 3 (F3) is one of the formula racing categories which ranks below Formula 1 (F1), GP2 and Formula NIPPON.
F3 series races are held in many countries such as European countries and Japan with regulated machines by FIA standardized rules. F3 series races are positioned as the gateway to success for young talented drivers and many went up to F1 from F3 such as Lewis Hamilton and Kazuki Nakajima. There are high-level series in each county and some drivers such as Jenson Button and Takuma Sato directly stepped up to F1 from F3.

The machines used in F3 racing are mainly made by Dallara Automobili S.p.A. from Italy. Many factors are tightly regulated regarding machine performance. Engines are classified by which ones are manufactured a minimum of 2500 cars in a year and should be 2.0-litre straight four engines. Also, each series has to put different control tires. A 26mm air restrictor limits engine power and maximum output is about 210hp. Many competitors supply base engines under the standardized international rules, therefore F3 category encompasses a wide range.
Due to the international equal regulations, F3 makes international championships possible. These championships such as Marlboro Masters and Macao Grand Prix gather top drivers of F3 series in each country. In recent years, Japanese drivers have had great success and F3 is getting attention in Europe as well as in Japan.
F3 was first held in Japan in 1979. Since then, all-Japan F3 has a long history. Nowadays, F3 in each country has 2 races and this allows young drives to gain valuable racing experience.
In 2008, an F3 National Class was set up which uses one generation aged machines with a one-design engine at all-Japan F3. This makes it possible to participate in a race at a low cost. Because of this, all-Japan F3 becomes mixed races with 2 classes and this leads to more participation. Young drivers who turn out to all-Japan F3 improve their level year by year. We can say all-Japan F3 has achieved becoming a formula racing category throughout the world.
